What Types of Privacy Fences Are Right for Your Home?

By April 3, 2014No Comments

There are several types of privacy fencing for homeowners to choose from.  In this article we will look at three of the most popular choices.

  1. Flat privacy fences offer the ultimate in protection from unwanted views and intruders.  This is especially true when the fence is six feet high or higher.  With this style, the boards are joined end-to-end with no gaps in between.  The result is a solid border that prevents anyone from seeing in.  This design can be combined with features like spikes along the top to deter trespassers.  This option is the most secure of the types of privacy fences discussed in this article.  However, some people feel that it gives the home a “fortress” appearance.
  2. Board-on-board fences use two horizontal stringers.  One runs along the top of the fence, the other along the bottom.  Planks are nailed to the stringers in a straight up-and-down fashion, with a few inches of gap between those on the same side.  The boards are interlaced so that it’s impossible to see through the fence unless the person is right next to it.  This option offers excellent privacy, but it also permits breezes to flow through.
  3. Lattice fences offer even more airflow, along with sunlight for plants and animals.  On the other hand, lattice is relatively open when compared to the other options discussed in this article.  While views inside the yard are somewhat obscured, persons on the outside can still see what is going on.  Lattice fences are good for those who want a degree of privacy but also want to feel connected to the world outside.

You can also combine some of these types of privacy fences; for example, you could do a flat privacy fence for the bottom part of the fence, and use lattice for the upper third of the fence. Our motto is “You dream it, we build it!” for a reason.
