As useful as these outdoor spaces are, however, making sure you’re getting the most from them requires a touch of design know-how. So here are four tips for making your patio all it can be.
- Decide how you will use your patio. Will be it a spot for an occasional outdoor meal between family members, or do you plan to entertain large groups of people? Will a small charcoal grill be enough, or do your plans require a large, fully-equipped outdoor kitchen? Defining these functions beforehand will help you to choose the right furnishings for your needs.
- Remember the weather. San Antonio gets generous amounts of sunlight year-round, so any items you choose should be able to stand up to solar rays. At the same time, we sometimes get strong winds and an occasional torrential rain. So choose furnishings that can hold up to the elements, even if your patio has a roof or other cover.
- If your patio is large enough, then you may wish to divide it into “zones.” For example, you might reserve the center for meals while having an area near the back edge for use as a bar or electronic media. You might devote a single corner to a water feature while reserving the opposite space for a serving buffet. Draw these zones out onto a sheet of paper and take it with you when you shop for furnishings.
